Richard – Collapsus Trachea

This is Richard (inside the oxygen cage), who came to our clinic with severe paroxysmal coughing (originating from the trachea), tachypnea, dyspnea, and cyanotic mucous membranes.

His X-ray confirmed our initial suspicion: tracheal collapse.

Notice how the “black tube” running through the neck suddenly narrows/disappears and then opens again. The “black tube” refers to the trachea, which carries air from the outside environment to the lungs and vice versa.

Breeds such as Pomeranians and Yorkshire Terriers are the number one candidates for this condition due to genetic predisposition.

Tracheal collapse is the result of weakened, flexible tracheal cartilage. The tracheal walls fold inward, causing difficulty mainly during inspiration, but also during expiration.

Early symptoms that should prompt a veterinary visit include a mild, dry cough that becomes more pronounced when the dog is overexcited (for example, when seeing and greeting you).

Treatment: Conservative management or surgical intervention (stent placement), depending on how advanced the condition is and the patient’s response to medication.
