Dukas visited us from Salamina, presenting with severe gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting and diarrhea) and complete anorexia.
Diagnosis: Acute pancreatitis.
Typical symptoms – vomiting, diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, anorexia.
Diagnostic tools – Abdominal ultrasound can visualize pancreatic inflammation.
Blood tests (CBC, biochemistry, and cPLi) are essential to assess the patient’s condition and detect any secondary complications.
Treatment: Hospitalization with intravenous fluid therapy and symptomatic management, including antibiotics, gastroprotectants, antiemetics, and anti-inflammatory medication.
Pancreatitis, by definition, carries a guarded prognosis! It can even be life-threatening for the patient.
This is why symptoms should never be ignored, and veterinary attention must be sought immediately.
Dukas’ story had a happy ending! Although he arrived with very poor blood test results and secondary pathology affecting the gallbladder, after eight days of intensive care, he recovered. He is now ready to return to the island, eating well again and back in the mood for play!
