First Days Guide with Your Puppy or Kitten

Welcoming a puppy or kitten into your home brings excitement — but also big changes. The first days are crucial for emotional adjustment, training, and building a bond with your new pet. Below is a practical guide with everything you need to know for a smooth and safe start.

Create a Calm First Experience

When your new pet enters your home for the first time:

  • Keep the number of people in the room low — avoid noise and high activity.
  • Let the animal explore at its own pace.
  • Don’t insist on petting or cuddling if it seems hesitant.

The first impression of their new environment will influence their behavior in the days to come.

Provide a Stable and Safe Space

Set up a designated corner where your pet can find peace:

  • Place their bed, food and water bowls, and a few toys there.
  • Avoid moving their things around too often — stability creates a sense of security.
  • For puppies, a crate or playpen can help create a “den” feeling.

Establish a Routine from Day One

The more consistent the schedule for meals, playtime, and rest, the faster your pet will feel safe and start adapting:

  • Set meal times (e.g., three meals a day for puppies).
  • Take puppies out for toilet breaks immediately after meals or naps.
  • For kittens, keep the litter tray in an accessible spot and show them where it is.

Visit your Veterinarian

Within the first 3–5 days, it’s recommended to arrange for:

  • A general veterinary check-up
  • Starting a vaccination program
  • Internal and external parasite prevention
  • Microchipping (if not already done)

Prevention is the foundation for a healthy start.

Don’t Forget Their Emotional Needs

Puppies and kittens need:

  • Physical contact and play
  • Daily engagement and mental stimulation
  • Uninterrupted rest (they sleep many hours a day)

Your bond is built through presence and attention — not just food or discipline.

Be Prepared for Small “Accidents”

Don’t be alarmed by the first little mishaps (toileting indoors, nipping, scratching furniture). These are normal and temporary. Address them calmly with proper guidance — never with shouting or punishment.
